 A Question to Ponder

In one of his lectures, the late Robert G. Ingersol gave utterance to the following statement: "If I had lived when Jesus of Nazareth lived, I, too, would have been his disciple." Whether he would have been or would not have been a disciple of the Lord is not our question here. The question with which we shall grapple is this: If YOU had lived when Jesus lived in the flesh, would YOU have been His disciple? Be not hasty in your answer. Ponder well the question. In the attitudes and rumors and conditions that prevailed among many of His contemporaries, what would you/I have done had we been there? What were some of the things they said?

His birth was lowly. He was born in a stable, of humble parentage. When the ruler raged Joseph and Mary, with the child, fled to a foreign land. (Matthew 2). The legitimacy of His birth was questioned. We believe, of course, that He was miraculously conceived and born of a virgin. But that was not known or believed in that day. Would you have followed a man whose birth was so lowly in the eyes of His contemporaries?

He was without rank or position. In civil affairs, He was not distinguished. In the Jewish religion, He was not a priest; He was not a ruler of a synagogue; He was not a member of the Sanhedrin, the supreme court of the Jews. In the realm of material things, He might be thought of as a pauper. He was an itinerate preacher—He possessed no land, no home, as people then knew them. (Matthew 8:20). After He died He was buried in a borrowed tomb. (Matthew 27:57-60). Would you have attached yourself to a personality who was without rank in civil or religious or material matters?

His associates were social outcasts. Not all of them, but many belonged to the lower level of society, according to the standards of the time. He ate with publicans and sinners (Luke 15:1-2); visited in the home of a despised tax collector (Luke 19:19); allowed a woman of sinful reputation to anoint His feet in public (Luke 7:36-39); and to the astonishment of His disciples He talked in private with a woman of bad repute. (John 4). Would you have followed a man who was associated with such people?

His character was in dispute. We know, of course, that His character was flawless; but some of His contemporaries accused Him of evil. They said He was a gluttonous man, and a wine bibber. (Luke 7:34)/ that He had a demon, and was mad (John 10:20); that He was a sinner (John 9:24) - a Sabbath breaker, a law violator. The rulers of the Jewish church—men who were supreme in authority in the realm of religion—turned against Him. Would you have been a disciple of a man concerning whom such ugly rumors were circulated?

He was without "academic" recognition. He was not considered a man of letters—of high attainment in the educational field. Perhaps, He attended the school of the synagogue, but we have no record of it. (John 7:15). There were universities in that day—at Athens, at Alexandria, at Jerusalem. But He attended none of them. He held no academic degree. The only writing that He did that we know anything about is once when he wrote on the ground. (John 8:13). Would you have followed a leader who had little or no recognition in the field of education?

He was an unpopular man. During the year of His work of ministry He was publically acclaimed—He was followed by many, who beheld His miracles and heard His lessons. The second year was different—The Pharisees and Sadducees, the elite, the powerful, left Him. Many of His disciples went back and followed Him no more. The third year was even more extreme—only a few were true to Him: the twelve and a mere handful of others. At the close of the year He stood almost alone. Then came the crisis, when Judas betrayed Him, Simon denied Him, and the others fled. Only John was with Him through the great ordeal that followed. When He was tried, not a voice was raised in His defense, unless it was the Governor's wife. (Matthew 27:19). Would you have followed a man who was so unpopular? An man who aroused nothing but opposition?

He was crucified. He was put to death by the supreme civil and religious powers. He was suspended on a cross between two thieves. He was mocked and jeered while He was dying. Would you have remained a disciple of a Master who was publically executed?

By His sinless life, the might of His miracles, the wisdom of His words, and the power of His resurrection from the dead, the deity of His person is loudly proclaimed. Standing in the glorious light of things we exclaim with Thomas, "MY Lord and My God!" But His contemporaries did not see Him as we see Him. If you had lived when Jesus lived, would you have been His disciple? Are you now His disciple?

If you follow the Christ ‑

When public opinion opposes,

When the religious and political authorities condemn, When "high society" disapproves,

When your devotion brings sneers and jeers, When your following means suffering,

When you must stand alone,

Then you are indeed His disciple!

God's replacement strategy Ephesians  4 -5        By David Spaun

A.   Introduction

1.    Have you ever felt that once you've eliminated some 'bad' in your life that it just crops back up again?

a.    Why does it seem that many people (us included) struggle with the same negative attitudes, sins, or shortcomings over and over?

2.   Perhaps part of the reason is that we neglect an important principle: We must replace the bad with something good\

B.   The Principle from Jesus - Luke 11.-14-28

     1.    Jesus had just cast out a demon from a man - Luke 11:14

          a.    He was then accused of being possessed - 11:15

                1)    His response: "That makes no sense whatsoever" - 11:17-20

          b.   In fact, Jesus had power over all the demons - 11:21-22

2.    2.    Jesus now appeals to a principle: if the bad isn't replaced with good, one can get into worse shape than before - 11:24-26

a.          a .  His application has less lo do with demons and more 10 do with attitude toward the word of God - 11:27-28

    3.    Getting rid of 'bad' just gets us to "neutral." We must strive toward 'good, too!

C.   Paul's Strategy -Eph 4:11-5:21

1.       1.   This principle is taught throughout Scripture. Here is a place where we can see it applied numerous times in one section. How does Paul explain this? Let's see:

            a.    (please refer to the chart)

2.      2.   Notice he's teaching to eliminate the bad, but also replace it with something good.

.            a.    Why is this so critical? Without good, we're just 'not doing bad.' While we shouldn't do the 'bad.' God calls us to grow into the realm of holiness.

D.   Application

        1.    Think of the many areas that we seem to struggle with recurring sin:

            a.    Unrighteous anger towards others/situations

            b.    Lack of respect toward a husband

            c.    Lustful thoughts

           d.    Selfishness

2.      2.   In all of these, we can just 'eliminate' the bad. However, without a replacement, we will fall back into old habits. We must replace it with something else!

.            a.    Remember, the problem with the church at Laodicea was not that they were doing 'evil'.. .they just weren't doing any good, either - Rev 3:14-21

      3.   When speaking about our growth, we need to answer two questions;

           a.    What do you need to eliminated

           b.   What must you replace it with?

      4.   If you find yourself unable to get rid of some issue or sin no matter how often you've 'kicked it out.' start concentrating on its replacement!

Ephesians 4-5:

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit- just as you were called to one hope when you were called- 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:
"When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men."
9 (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.
20 You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. 21 Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 5      Back to Gods Replacement Strategy

1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a man is an idolater-has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
"Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."
15 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church- 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery-but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Luke 11:14-28

14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils.

23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.

24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first."

27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you."

28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
(from New International Version)

Rev 3:121

14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."

Christian Recreation

This article was presented at a Bible class one Sunday and I thought it might be of interest to others.

Only the uninformed or the religious fanatic would say that a Christian should not have a recreational life. All well-balanced, properly developed individuals must be engaged in recreation. A Christian is not different. It is not of a question of should we have recreation in our life, but what recreation is permissible. Just what can a Christian do and what must a Christian avoid? What recreation is right, and what recreation is wrong? These are perplexing questions that confront every Christian as he or she endeavors to select appropriate recreational activities.

The Bible does not answer these questions in specific terms of “thou shall not” or “thus says the Lord”, but the Bible does address them in principles. These principles should help us make the right choices as we consider the many recreational opportunities that confronting us every day. The following questions serve as a guide to exercise our minds in testing the acceptability of the different recreational activities.

  1. Does this activity destroy y identity as a Christian by causing me to be regarded as the world? 2 Cor 6:14; Rom 12:1,2

    1. Do I Go along with the crowd?

    2. Do my friends know that there are some things I will not do?

  1. Is the activity questionable in your own mind and therefore as offense to my conscience? Rom 14:22, 23; Jas 4:17

    1. If I don’t know if an activity is right or wrong, what should you do?

  1. Does this activity weaken my influence on unbelievers or could it become a stumbling block to my brethren? 1 Cor 8:7-13; 1 Cor 10:23, 24

    1. Will my being engaged in this activity make other Christians stronger or weaker?

    2. How serious is it if my influence is not all that great? Matt 18:6-7

  1. Is this activity harmful to my body? 1 Cor 6:9, 19, 20

    1. Why is it wrong for us to abuse our body?

    2. Could this also include activities and recreation involving extreme risks?

  1. Does this activity conflict with my duty as a Christian? Matt 6:33; 2 Tim 2:4, Heb 10:25

    1. What if my recreational activity causes me to miss assembling with the church?

    2. If every member of the church missed services for recreational activities, would the church be affected?

  1. Does this activity appeal to indecency or cultivate a fleshly appetite? Cor 3:3-5; Tit 2:11-13; Phil 4:8

    1. Would being engaged in this recreation be an undesirable habit?

    2. Does this recreation make my thoughts impure?

    3. Does this recreation interfere with my spiritual growth?

  1. Does this activity place me in bad company or at a disadvantage? 1 Cor 15:33; 1 Thes 5:21,22; 2 Cor 6:14-18

    1. Will my being engaged in this recreation make it harder for me to live as a Christian?

Conclusion: Some general questions we should consider concerning our recreation:

  1. 1.Would I want God to know that I’m engaged in this activity? (and He does).

  2. Could I invite Jesus to participate in this activity with me?

  3. Would I be willing to ask the preacher, or elders and their wives to join me in this activity?

  4. Would I want my parents, spouse, children or other family members to know that I participate in this activity

Scriptures Used

2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? NKJV

Rom 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. NKJV

Rom 14:22-23 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. NKJV

James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. NKJV

Return to 2

1 Cor 8:7-13 However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.  9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols? 11 And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? 12 But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. NKJV

1 Cor 10:23-24 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being. NKJV

Matt 18:6-7 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!  NKJV

Return to 3

1 Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

1 Cor 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.  NKJV

Return to 4

Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. NKJV

2 Tim 2:4-5 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
NKJV

Heb 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.  NKJV

Return to 5

Col 3:3-5 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.  5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. NKJV

Titus 2:11-13 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, NKJV

Phil 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things.
NKJV

1 Cor 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." NKJV

1 Thess 5:21-22 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.  NKJV

2 Cor 6:14-18 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people."  17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."  18'I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the LORD Almighty."  NKJV

Are You Worshipping God In Spirit And In Truth?

This Bible study course is written with the hope of helping us to worship God in the way that is acceptable to the Lord so we can go to heaven when this life is over. Jesus says in John 4:24, "God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." The reason I have used such a large number of scriptures throughout this course is to point to the truth of what God has said on how He is to be worshipped, and not what I say. For us to worship God in spirit and in truth we must make sure we obey all of His commandments as given by Him in the Bible on how He is to be worshipped. If we fail to follow God’s instructions it becomes sin, we will be lost and be punished along with Satan in eternal torment.

How To Do Personal Evangelism

You are to be commended for your desire to do personal evangelism.  We read in Proverbs 11:30, "He who wins souls is wise."  Where someone spends eternity can very well depend on what we do or don't do.  There are those desiring to hear the gospel but they don't know what it is and they will not know unless we teach them.

The purpose of this web site is to help you to teach the lost so they can be saved and go to Heaven.  Included in this web site is a 3 lesson Bible study you can download, print, and use to teach others the gospel of Christ.  Permission is granted for you to print the three lessons and anything else on this site and make as many copies as you need, but please do not sell them.   If you have any comment or questions, please E-mail me at ron@netbiblestudy.net   Ron Boatwright
